Alcan, Employees Raise CAN$1.2 Million In Aid To Tsunami Relief Efforts
Montreal, Canada 3/1/2005
Alcan Inc. (NYSE, TSX: AL) announced today that the Company and its employees have raised CAN$1.2 million to aid victims of the December 26, 2004 Tsunami that devastated Southeast Asia.
"The outpouring of support from Alcan employees immediately after this tragedy is truly remarkable. Their efforts will go a long way in helping survivors rebuild their lives and communities," said Travis Engen, President and Chief Executive Officer of Alcan Inc. "On behalf of the entire Alcan family, we will continue to support and pray for the families and friends of the victims," he added.
Direct employee contributions amounted to more than CAN$598,000 and were directly donated to local Red Crescent organizations. This figure will be matched by the Company, which will be presenting the Canadian Red Cross with a check for the outstanding amount. The collection program was managed at a site level and ran from January 4 to February 4, 2005.
Alcan operates two facilities in Indonesia, three in Thailand, and one each in Singapore and Malaysia with a total employment of approximately 4,400. All Alcan employees in the region have been accounted for and none of Alcan's facilities have been damaged.
Alcan is continuing to monitor the situation in the region and to assess additional means of providing assistance.
