Alcan Cable responds to get the lights back on after Hurricanes Charley and Frances
Atlanta, Georgia 9/27/2004
On August 11, two days before Hurricane Charley made landfall, Alcan Cable employees were already working with both Progress Energy Florida and Florida Power and Light to assure their needs would be met in the coming days. After both Hurricane Charley and Frances, the state of Florida was badly hit with 2.8 million people without power and approximately $17 billion in damage. Helped by Alcan Cable within seven days or less, 90% of the 2.8 million people had their power back on.
"I wish all of our vendors had responded to these emergencies as quickly and as well as Alcan did. Alcan's level of service certainly made my job a lot easier." Said Joe Harris at Progress Energy Florida.
There are several factors that allow Alcan Cable to respond quickly. First and foremost, Alcan fosters open communication with its customers through long-term partnerships. In addition, emergency stock is held for customers from June through November for hurricane emergencies such as this. Alcan also starts sourcing material, ramping up production and preparing for shipments days before the hurricane even makes landfall. Finally, Alcan Cable's vertical integration allows it to respond in a timely manner. "This type of recovery requires a phenomenal commitment and team effort that stretches across every area of our business," commented Ian Hewett, President of Alcan Cable.
In response to both hurricanes' destruction, Alcan Cable shipped over 2.5 million composite pounds of bare and overhead service cable. Alcan's Williamsport and St. Maurice plants continue to work to the maximum output level to respond to the disaster relief efforts.
